Global G.A.P. is a farm assurance program that seeks to restore consumer confidence that a food supplier has met a series of requirements; marking them out as using Good Agricultural Practice. All farmers growing crops or raising animals and suppliers of fish for human consumption now have to comply with schemes at least equivalent to Global GAP to supply into the major retailers.
GlobalGap Farm Assurance

The scheme started out as the EurepGAP standard; governing farm management practise in the late 1990s. Following a slew of food scandals, European supermarkets became desperate to find ways to secure their supply chains against further food scares, precipitated by suppliers.

Since 2007, the European GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) scheme has gone global, being the world's most widely adopted farm certification scheme. It has succeeded in bringing a high degree of conformity and increased confidence to retailers' supplier standards. It has also reduced the burden for farmers slightly. They previously had to conform to a bewildering array of sometimes conflicting standards, to access the market in multiple retail chains such as Marks & Spencer. Nowadays Global GAP is a basic requirement for supplying agricultural products to European customers and increasingly in the UK (through Tesco’s recent Nurture Module).

What Global GAP Does for Food Safety

The Global GAP standard was developed using the robust guidelines of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) procedures. This methodology was developed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in the wake of the ‘90s food scares in the developed world. Some of the food safety benefits of working within the Global GAP framework for retailers and end consumers include:

Sourcing food products from suppliers who meet recognised food safety and hygiene standards.

Securing a network of reliable, trusted food producers in your supply chain.

The benefit of Global GAP’s traceability system allowing monitoring of producers, certifications & audits.

Global GAP Certification of Crops

The Global GAP scheme certifies crops for human consumption through the Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) Standard which is made up of a set of rules control points and compliance criteria relevant to the safe production of fruit vegetables and other plant crops. This modular framework operates at 3 levels for each crop:

  • * All Farm Base Module: Is the foundation of all requirements that a producer needs to comply with first to achieve certification.
  • * Scope Module: Sets out the criteria for each of Global GAP’s 3 food production sectors (referred to as Scopes): Crops, Livestock & Aquaculture.
  • * Sub-scope Module: Control Point Compliance Criteria (CPCC) which define the expectations for specific crops & food products as well as each of the stages of food production and the supply chain itself.
  • * Tesco Nurture Module: An additional module designed specifically for suppliers into Tesco’s. Comprising 6 additional questions, this will give you the potential to supply into Tesco’s supply chain.

A grower wishing to bring a new variety of apple or carrot to the market will need to first of all meet the criteria of the All farm Base module, then the criteria for the crop growing scope before finally being audited against the CPCC for the specific Fruit & Vegetables sub scope that apply to the apples, he is really interested in certification for!

Global GAP Support from ML3 Technical

ML3 Technical offers support in the Global GAP sub-scopes, for Fruit & Vegetables Standard and the Tesco Nurture Module.

The standard for each sub scope – such as the Fruit & Vegetables Standard, audits every part of the production process, including soil management, plant protection product application, harvesting, harvested produce handling, packing, storing and transporting.

ML3 Technical can guide you through the audit preparations needed to conform to the Global GAP Checklist, well in advance of the audit itself, to identify any food safety shortcomings within your production process and more importantly; identify remedial measures to get you ready for the live audit.

Supporting documentation is available to help you implement the GlobalGap standard on your farm. The documents available from ML3 Technical directly or via our subscription service include:

  • * HACCP
  • * Field Risk Assessments
  • * Documentation to support traceability from field to customer
  • * Evidence of checks performed on crops and buildings
  • * Policies for various activities including Soil Management and Personal Hygiene
  • * A basic Health & Safety Risk Assessment

How The Scheme Benefits Producers Now

The Global GAP scheme is underpinned by 3 respected standards authorities.

  • * ISO Guide 65 for certifications schemes
  • * GFSI – Global Food Safety Initiative
  • * HACCP methodology

Global GAP is a responsive framework for food safety management. It is being shaped by its users as new knowledge emerges and better practise is identified.

Taking the Global GAP pathway to accreditation provides a set of definitive rules for produce growers and then each production unit’s adherence to those rules is audited by highly trained independent third party auditors. ML3 Technical will help you to be prepared for the rigours of those inspections. The structure of Global GAP accreditation helps farmers and growers to:

  • * Meet the challenge of growing safe, healthy products responsibly.
  • * Reduces pressures from legislation, retailers & consumers.
  • * Guidance on adopting production techniques that reduce environmental impact of farming.
  • * Cost savings and reduced pollution risks from more sustainable use of agro-chemicals.
  • * Insights into making more efficient use of natural resources in the farm environment.
  • * Guidelines to best practise in safeguarding the welfare of workers, farm animals and wildlife.
  • * Marketing benefits of being able to show commitment to good agricultural/fish farming practices.
  • * GLOBAL GAP certification opens the door to market access.
